Welcome to Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada Convention 2012

Sidney by the Sea

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the charming seaside Town of Sidney. Sidney is situated on the Saanich Peninsula, 26 km north of Victoria, British Columbia’s capital city. Sidney is a pedestrian friendly town with flat, easy to walk streets, marine promenades and easy access to beaches. Sailboats, yachts and power boats cruise the Sidney waterfront. The Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, easily seen from Sidney, is comprised of 65 smaller islands and reefs which protect the many endangered plant and animal species found nowhere else in Canada.

The Convention will be held at the Mary Winspear Convention Centre, one kilometer from the seaside. Several accommodations are within walking distance to the centre and RV parking is on site at the Centre or within a short driving distance.

Within a few blocks you will find Canada’s only Book Town with 11 independent stores. Also, art galleries, eclectic and contemporary gift shops, intriguing antique stores, outdoor coffee shops, bakeries with delectable goodies, candy shops and chocolate stores. “ Shop until you drop!” All amenities are within walking distance.

Sidney boasts a Historical Museum, Historical Artifacts Museum ( farm machinery/boats etc.) and B.C. Aviation Museum as well as two stunningly located golf courses. Close is a world class Centre of the Universe where one can view the cosmos through telescopes with an astronomer as a guide; a Marine Ecology Centre with its floating research laboratory; and the world famous Butchart Gardens are 20 minutes away. Thursday evening there is a Summer Market. Part of the main street, Beacon Ave., turns into an outdoor pedestrian mall of over 150 stalls selling everything from wild salmon, fresh farm produce, delicious breads to clothing, jewelry and crafts. Fabulous!

The Victoria International Airport and BC Ferry Terminal are 15 minutes from the Convention Centre. This is a little town with a Very Big Heart and we warmly welcome you.
